Is your scaffolding safety-certified?

Yes. Safety is a fundamental part of how Xmun Projects Ltd. operates, and our scaffolding service is no exception. Every scaffolding structure we erect is assembled, inspected, and maintained in accordance with recognised safety standards. We understand that scaffolding is not just a convenience — it is a critical piece of safety infrastructure that protects our workers, your property, and the general public. When you hire Xmun Projects for any job that involves scaffolding, you can be confident that the structure has been properly designed, competently erected, and thoroughly checked before anyone sets foot on it.

Full Safety Checks and Certification

Before any scaffolding structure is handed over for use on a project, it undergoes a comprehensive safety inspection. This inspection covers every aspect of the scaffold: the condition of the base and foundations, the integrity of the standards (vertical tubes), ledgers (horizontal tubes), and transoms (cross tubes), the security of all couplers and fittings, the presence and correct installation of guardrails and toe boards, the stability of the overall structure, and the adequacy of access points such as ladders or stair towers. Only once the scaffold has passed this inspection is it cleared for use. If any issues are identified — even minor ones — they are resolved before work begins. This is not a formality. It is a discipline that we apply consistently on every project, whether the scaffolding is a simple single-lift setup on a village house or a complex multi-storey structure on a commercial building.

Local Safety Standards and Compliance

Construction safety in Malta is governed by a framework of regulations that align with European Union directives on workplace health and safety. The Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA) is the regulatory body responsible for overseeing compliance in Malta. Scaffolding falls under the broader requirements for temporary works at height, and there are specific obligations regarding how scaffolding must be designed, erected, used, and dismantled. At Xmun Projects, we are fully aware of these requirements and ensure that our scaffolding operations comply with them. This includes ensuring that scaffolding is erected by competent persons, that it is suitable for the loads it will carry, that it provides safe working platforms with appropriate edge protection, and that it is regularly inspected throughout the duration of its use. Compliance is not just about avoiding penalties — it is about ensuring that every person on or near the scaffold goes home safely at the end of the day.

What Safety Certification Involves

When we refer to safety certification of our scaffolding, we mean the documented process of inspection and sign-off that confirms the structure is safe for use. This process typically involves a visual and physical inspection of the completed scaffold by a competent person — someone with the training and experience to identify potential hazards and assess structural integrity. The inspection checks that the scaffold has been built in accordance with the design, that all components are in good condition and correctly fitted, that the scaffold is stable and adequately tied or braced to the building where required, and that safe access and working platforms are in place. The results of the inspection are recorded, and any defects or non-conformities are noted and rectified before the scaffold is used. This documentation provides a clear record that the scaffold has been checked and approved, which is important both for regulatory compliance and for the peace of mind of everyone involved in the project.

How Scaffolding Is Inspected and Maintained

Scaffolding inspection is not a one-time event. Under good practice and regulatory requirements, scaffolding should be inspected at regular intervals throughout its period of use — typically at least once every seven days, and always after any event that could have affected its stability, such as strong winds, heavy rain, or any modification to the structure. At Xmun Projects, we carry out these ongoing inspections as a standard part of our project management. If the scaffold needs to remain in place for an extended period, we ensure it is checked regularly and that any wear, loosening of fittings, or damage from weather or accidental impact is identified and addressed promptly. We also maintain our scaffolding components in good condition between projects, inspecting tubes, fittings, boards, and other elements for damage, corrosion, or wear, and replacing any items that do not meet our standards. Malta’s salt air and coastal environment can be harsh on metal components, so this ongoing maintenance is essential to ensure that our scaffolding remains safe and reliable.

Worker Safety and Public Safety Considerations

Scaffolding safety serves two distinct but equally important purposes: protecting the workers who use the scaffold, and protecting members of the public who may be in the vicinity. For workers, the scaffold must provide a stable, level working platform with guardrails to prevent falls, toe boards to prevent tools or materials from being knocked off the edge, and safe means of access between levels. Workers must be able to move about the scaffold without risk of tripping, slipping, or encountering unsecured edges. For the public, the primary concern is preventing objects from falling from the scaffold onto people passing below, and ensuring that the scaffold itself does not encroach on pedestrian or vehicle routes in an unsafe manner. In Malta’s historic village cores and busy urban streets, scaffolding often sits directly adjacent to public footpaths and roads. We address this by installing protective debris netting or sheeting on the outer face of the scaffold, placing warning signs around the base, and where necessary, installing temporary pedestrian walkways or barriers to guide foot traffic safely past the works. These measures are not optional extras — they are a core part of how we set up every scaffold on every project.

Insurance and Liability Aspects

Working at height carries inherent risks, and proper insurance coverage is essential. Xmun Projects Ltd. is a registered business with appropriate insurance in place to cover our operations, including work involving scaffolding. This provides protection for our workers, for your property, and for third parties. If you are hiring a contractor for any work that involves scaffolding, it is always wise to ask about their insurance status and their approach to safety. An uninsured or underinsured contractor who takes shortcuts with scaffolding safety exposes you to potential liability if something goes wrong. By working with a registered, insured company like Xmun Projects, you are protecting yourself as well as ensuring a safe working environment. We are happy to discuss our insurance coverage and safety practices with any client who asks — transparency in these matters is something we actively encourage.

Multi-Storey and Complex Elevation Setups

Some of the most demanding scaffolding work we undertake involves multi-storey buildings and properties with complex elevations. In Malta and Gozo, it is common to find buildings of three, four, or even five storeys, particularly in urban areas like Valletta, Sliema, and Victoria. Scaffolding for these buildings must be carefully designed to handle the height, the loads imposed by workers and materials at each level, and the wind forces that increase with elevation. Tying the scaffold securely to the building at regular intervals is critical for stability. On properties with irregular facades — stepped profiles, projecting balconies, recessed windows, or curved walls — the scaffolding must be configured to follow these contours while still providing safe, level working platforms. Our team has the experience to design and build scaffolding for these challenging situations, and we take the time to get it right, because safety at height is not something that can be improvised on site.
